"story_title" => "The Dark Side of Marketing Healthy Food to Children",
"story_summary" => "In response to the public outcry over the negative impacts of junk food marketing to children, food companies have started using popular media characters to market "healthy" foods to children. These products include fruits and vegetables, as well as processed food. So we now have Campbell's Disney Princess "Healthy Kids" soup[1], Kellogg's Scooby-Doo! cereal[2] (with less sugar), and others. But is this really progress? The developmental vulnerabilities of children, along with the legal, ethical, and political pitfalls of encouraging the food industry to target kids, make marketing food to children harmful regardless of nutritional content. Children Are Especially Vulnerable to Advertising Researchers and advocates for children's health agree that advertising junk food to children is effective. One 30-second commercial can influence the food preferences of children as young as age two[3]. For young children, branding even trumps taste. Preschool children report[4] that junk food in McDonald's packaging taste better than food in plain wrapping -- even if it's the same food. Similar studies show the same results[5] for food packaging featuring media characters. Research demonstrates that marketing any product to children under age 12 is inherently deceptive[6]. Unlike adults, young children do not have the cognitive capacity to fully understand the purpose of advertising. Very young children cannot even distinguish between a TV program and a commercial. Until the age of about eight, they don't really understand the concept of selling and they tend to believe what they see. Moreover, only 40 percent of 11 and 12 year olds have a full understanding of persuasive intent -- that every aspect of advertising is designed to convince them to do things they might not do otherwise. This makes children especially vulnerable[7] to deception by hyperbole, puffery, and other common advertising techniques. Marketing Healthy Food Undermines Healthy Child Development Some advocates argue that deceiving children to eat healthy food is good strategy. But such tactics are actually harmful. A primary goal for advocates should be for children to develop a healthy relationship to food. Foisting character-branded products on children undermines that effort. Marketing to children does more than sell products -- it inculcates habits and behaviors. Marketing branded produce such as Kung-Fu Panda Edamame[8] to children instills the unhealthy habit of choosing food based on marketing cues such as celebrity, rather than on a child's own innate hunger, taste, or good nutrition. Children's health depends on more than diet; their social, emotional and cognitive nourishment are also important. Popular media icons used to sell kids veggies also market myriad other products, including junk food, junk toys and screen media. Research shows that, among other harms, such commercialism inhibits children's creative play[9] -- the foundation of learning, creativity, constructive problem solving, and the capacity to initiate and complete tasks and projects -- which is essential to a truly healthy childhood. And excessive screen time is linked to problems ranging from unhealthy eating, sleep disturbance and poor school performance[10]. All Marketing to Children Is Inherently Misleading While the food industry claims it has a First Amendment right to advertise to children, the law says otherwise. Free speech is not a blank check; it has limits. Current federal law actually prohibits unfair or deceptive advertising[11]. Similarly, false or misleading advertising is not allowed under most state consumer protection statutes[12]. Marketing to children does not get First Amendment protection because it is inherently misleading[13]. If a young child cannot even understand the purpose of an ad, then marketing anything to that child is both unfair and deceptive. The nutritional content of the product being marketed is irrelevant. With enough political will, lawmakers could pass new laws banning marketing to children without running afoul of the First Amendment. Such policies are in effect in several other countries[14], and have not caused the economic sky to fall. Calling for governmental endorsement of marketing "healthy" food to children[15] potentially undermines these legal theories, which we need to preserve as we build a larger movement of advocates to protect children in a more effective and meaningful way. We Can't Beat the Food Industry at its Own Game Finally, the food industry is happy to play along when advocates call for the marketing of "healthier" food to children. Corporate lobbyists have invented a voluntary self-regulation scheme[16] to convince politicians and the public they've got it covered with nutrition standards that allegedly protect children. But as many of these same advocates have rightly pointed out again [17]and again[18], this non-system is a dismal failure. Even the federal government couldn't persuade [19]the food industry to improve its voluntary guidelines. By begging and pleading with the food industry to improve how it markets to children, instead of working to end food marketing to children entirely, we are continuing to endorse a failed system in which industry gets to set the rules, break them whenever it pleases, and then take credit for doing the right thing. The CEO of McDonald's recently claimed [20]with a straight face that his company does not market to children. To bolster his case, he pointed to milk and apple slices in Happy Meals. This is just the sort of twisted logic that results from advocates asking industry to set nutrition standards for food marketing to children. Less sugar in Scooby-Doo cereal and more apple slices in Happy Meals will not make children healthier. Instead of settling for such crumbs, advocates should take a stronger stand to protect children and demand that corporations stop engaging altogether in the unethical practice of marketing to children. Yes, this is a Herculean task and yes, it will take a massive movement to accomplish. Let's get to work. The cost to children is too high if we don't. "story_summary" => "Get Healthy Living Alerts: It's been fascinating to observe the public conversation about Angelina Jolie's decision to have a prophylactic double mastectomy. What began as a headline story about the actress's dramatic surgery has evolved into a serious, educational discussion about women's health. By sharing the intimate details of her story, Angelina Jolie raised public awareness around the world about the risks, diagnosis, treatment of breast cancer and the links between the disease and ovarian cancer. Her decision to discuss such a personal matter has been educational, inspirational and -- for some -- transformative. Many women, however, still find it difficult to talk about their personal experiences. We view certain subjects -- whether it's health, fertility, money or career -- as too intimate to discuss publicly, even with our friends. Yet, when we share our personal stories, we empower one another and promote change. I recognized the power of sharing personal experiences during one of the most devastating times of my life -- the passing of my younger sister, Laura Lia Murray, from ovarian cancer. Upon joining Gurwitch Products, the parent company of Laura Mercier, I soon discovered that the brand's founder, Laura Mercier, had been deeply affected by ovarian cancer as well. Her dear friend Ranee Flynn had been fighting the disease for years. As we talked about my sister and Ranee, Laura and I knew that we had to do something to make a difference for all of the other sisters, friends, mothers and aunts who are now and will someday, face ovarian cancer. We committed to one another that we would make a difference in the lives of women. With the help of our colleagues, we developed the Laura Mercier Ovarian Cancer Fund[1] (LMOCF), a nonprofit initiative designed to raise awareness, fund research and educational efforts that will help diagnose, treat and support woman with ovarian cancer. We are already changing things for the better and bringing new hope to women with this disease. Friends, colleagues and customers are donating generously to the cause, supporting research efforts to improve diagnosis and find a cure. A growing community is uniting in the fight against women's cancers by educating themselves and others on the facts of ovarian cancer. You can join them. "story_title" => "What Is Belviq, the New Weight Loss Drug?",
"story_summary" => "Belviq is a new weight loss drug that just became available by prescription this past week, one of only two new weight loss drugs approved by the FDA in the last 13 years. (The other is Qsymia, which I have already written about.) It is made by Arena Pharmaceuticals. Belviq is the trade name, Lorcaserin is the generic name, and it was called Lorqess during its development. Belviq affects the serotonin receptors in the brain, changing the neurotransmitter action of serotonin, the brain chemical you hear about related to mood. SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) are a group of drugs that are mainly used to treat depression, but it has been found that many of the drugs that affect neurotransmitters have lots of other affects, change in appetite among them. Drugs that change the action of the neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine are used to treat many psychological conditions, even psychotic disorders, because they change the way we think and feel. They can create experience in the psyche like hallucinations, expansive thoughts or euphoria (good mood or feeling), or quell it, like reducing cravings and dark thoughts, or quieting hallucinations and mania. The antidepressant Wellbutrin was found to quiet the cravings of people trying to quit smoking and was then marketed also as Zyban. Some of these drugs were found to increase appetite, cravings, and drive to eat, and some have been found to reduce appetite and cravings. Pharmaceutical companies create new drugs, experiment with them, then market them for the effects that they produce. Belviq is sold as a weight loss drug, a drug to reduce appetite. Does it work? Reliable clinical studies have shown that people given the drug lost weight slightly more than people given a placebo[1], even without instruction in weight loss protocols. In studies where people were instructed in weight loss technique, people taking the drug did about twice as well as those taking the placebo[2]. In almost all cases, the weight loss was slight, and the weight was regained after the trials. I have seen no reports that relate the subjective experience of appetite or craving suppression by the study subjects, which is the main thing I would like to know about. One would assume, based on the results of the clinical studies, that eating drive was reduced by the drug. What value would any weight loss drug have? Everyone familiar with my work knows that there is no mystical magic to successful weight loss. We must establish new behavior where we eat less, to the degree that we lose weight and keep it off. My method has been so successful because of the use of psychological techniques that are so effective in managing thoughts and feelings and so effective in changing habits by "deleting" damaging habits and "installing" healthy habits. I know, from personal experience, as well as my work with clients and patients, that we are all different in many ways, and we have different psychological experience, like appetite, cravings and compulsion. For those who experience uncontrollable drive that results in life-threatening bingeing and uncontrollable compulsive eating, I pray that we find a drug that can mitigate outrageous eating drive without presenting unwanted and dangerous side effects. People would still have to manage their behavior with the methods I teach, but it would be so much easier if one were not tormented by the compulsion that I know some people experience. Is Belviq such a drug? I hope to find out. Is Belviq safe? There are so many bad side effects being reported that it is scary, even to a mental health counselor who has seen it all. Not only are psychological side effects being reported, but risk of medical problems seems high. Both the University of California's Wellness Letter[3] and Consumer Reports[4] have published critical reviews that would discourage just about anyone but the most desperate from taking it. The Anderson Method recommendation: To solve your weight problem, you will have to create new habits of behavior and thinking, no matter what. You will need to maintain them for the rest of your life. Many people have used The Anderson Method[5] to do just that, some saying it was easy. If you can do that without drugs, that will be the best solution. After all, you don't want to be taking these drugs for the rest of your life, even if they are safe. If you are unable to manage compulsive eating and bingeing and the experience of craving is an absolute torment, drugs might help. There are a number of drugs that have helped people with unwanted eating drive, such as Wellbutrin, Lexapro and Topamax. And they have been around for a while. My advice, if you want to try a drug to help with weight control, is to find an expert in these drugs (psychiatrists or psychiatric nurses) and try one that is known to be safe. Remember that no matter what, no drug is going to make you lose weight or solve your weight problem. The solution is in behavioral therapy science. A drug may make it easier to do the work, but you will still need to do the work. If you want to try a drug, try one that's known to help some people and been around for a while. Let someone else be the guinea pig with Belviq. For more by William Anderson, MA, LMHC, click here[6]. For more on weight loss, click here[7]. "story_title" => "Going on a Six-day Mindfulness Retreat With Jon Kabat-Zinn",
"story_summary" => "The more you learn about mindfulness the more it becomes clear that Jon Kabat-Zinn is the go-to-guy for all things mindfulness related. He's talked to Oprah and the Dalai Lama about mindfulness, written best-selling books, coauthored research studies and created a mindfulness-based clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. So when I got the chance to join him on a six day mindfulness retreat with 35 other people, I jumped at it. Friday Day 1 Here I am arriving at Meditation Retreat Center on the first day. "Welcome," Jon Kabat-Zinn announced after we'd taken our seats in the yoga studio where all our classes would be held for the next six days. "Just you being here, doing what it takes to get your bodies in this room is a radical act of kindness, sanity and love." "Mindfulness is defined as being in the present moment with acceptance," he explained.. He began the opening session by teaching us a form of mindfulness meditation that focuses on simply noticing your own breathing: "Bring the breath to center stage, and leave everything else in the wings. If your mind wanders a thousand times away from the breath - and it will - your job is to bring it back a thousand times.'" The Yoga studio, before people arrived. We could sit in a chair or on the meditation cushions in front of the chairs. Saturday Day 2 The next morning we assembled again in the Yoga Studio at 9AM. It was a comfortable space, like a dance studio but with 37 blue metal folding chairs and in front of each chair was a matching set of meditation cushions. You could choose to meditate sitting up in the chair, or down on the floor on the cushions. Eventually, most people chose to sit on the floor. That first morning we did a combination of sitting meditation and walking meditation. In sitting meditation we continued to focus on our breathing. In walking meditation we focused intently on the trajectory of every single footstep. In the afternoon Kabat-Zinn introduced us to some of the philosophy behind mindfulness. "We have to be careful not to impose the grid of everything we know over everything we don't know," he said, now talking about the urge to pass judgment on people and activities. "Every second is new by definition. "It's not just about being in the present, it's about what results when, in the present, you completely let go of the past." Sunday Day 3 Jon Kabat-Zinn often gave long answers to short questions. He could easily extemporize on the answer to one question for up to 30 minutes. "Mindfulness increases your personal power. Your power isn't siphoned off by the need to be right. It isn't sucked up by yesterday's argument and it isn't challenged by tomorrow's fear. Being here right now restores your power, frees you from old arguments and liberates you from fear. Being in the moment is about what's happening right now. And every moment is different from the one that just preceded it. So if something or someone bugged you yesterday, and it's bothering you today, chances are you're grasping on to an old story." At the end of Day 3, Kabat-Zinn made a special announcement: "When you walk out of here tonight I want you to leave in silence. During the next 24 hours I don't want you to talk to anyone, don't look at anyone in the eyes, don't read anything, don't text anyone, don't watch TV and don't use your computers." Some people seemed to know this was coming. But it hit me totally by surprise. Monday Day 4 The next morning I sat directly across from JKZ at breakfast but we couldn't look at each other so it felt awkward. A mindfulness instructor would later explain to me that a mindfulness retreat isn't meant to be a vacation. "Growth doesn't happen when you're feeling comfortable," she explained. After breakfast I closed my eyes and faced the sun. Even though we had an hour to kill before the next session, I couldn't go read the paper, I couldn't listen to my iTunes, I couldn't check my email, I couldn't even phone home. I'd spent a lifetime driven by that voice in the head that says do something, accomplish more, acquire more, don't be lazy. But now, even though that voice wasn't completely silent, it had no raison-d'etre. I could just choose to ignore it, close my eyes, and just BE. After that, I walked up to my dormitory, to use the bathroom. I remembered what JKZ had said earlier in the day. "The signature feature of a retreat is there are no breaks. You walk back to your room mindfully and you lay down in bed mindfully and you go to the bathroom mindfully." Was I not being mindful about what he said earlier instead of thinking about what I was doing at that moment? Yes, I decided. But he also said that as soon as you become aware that your mind has wandered - you're back in the moment. Ah, so I was OK -- for the moment. The path leading from the dining hall to the Yoga Studio By the afternoon session I was beginning to grow restless. My shoulders started to cramp up from all the "sitting" (meditation). Eating meals without being able to smile back at someone or talk to someone seemed like punishment. (And if you wanted the salt or pepper and it was out of reach, you had to just get up and get it, because you couldn't ask someone or even signal to them that you wanted it.) That evening, in what seemed like a double-cross, Kabat-Zinn announced that the silence would continue on another night. No one was quite sure when it would end and that was making people even more restless. Tuesday Day 5 The next morning after breakfast we broke the silence with a special ceremony: We all managed to choose a partner without saying a word and then spent the next twenty minutes debriefing each other as to how the experience went. After 36 hours of silence, I can assure you we all had a lot to say. As it turned out, about half the people loved the experience and about half hated it. Soon the floor was open for questions. A woman from Denmark asked, "is there a bag of tricks you can give us to take back home when we're really in pain?" "There are lots of things you can do," Kabat-Zinn shot back. "You can: 1. Just flip out. 2. Get your fucking ass and put it on a cushion," he said implying that we should meditate, and using curse words for the first time during the retreat. "3. Do something to change the place you're in. Take a break. Remind yourself, life goes on, I'm still alive. 4. Listen deeply. 5. Stop, really stop. Even if you think you don't have time to - that's probably just mind-created anyway and remember the law of impermanence. Everything changes. Your anger, your crazy mood, your strong emotions will all go away." At the end of that afternoon session and what was now getting to be the waning hours of our retreat, we did the Mountain Meditation. "We sit in stillness like mountains," Kabat-Zinn began, giving his voice a certain extra presence. "The seasons change, the weather changes, people come and go, but the mountain remains unchanged. Storms swirl around the mountain, but the mountain is always grounded, always rooted in the earth, always still." At the end of that meditation I felt like I had finally gotten it. Mindfulness was not just about being in the moment. It was about acceptance, it was about not passing judgment, not clinging to old ideas and not resisting the inevitable process of change. When we are inside our thinking brain - as most of are 24/7 - our thoughts and emotions rule the day. But below that thinking brain was our mountain, our rock, our awareness, our stability. Jon Kabat-Zinn did his mindfulness walk in the exact same spot every time. Walking the same ten paces back and forth for the entire 45 minutes. Wednesday Day 6 "When you get home and your friends and family ask you what you did it may be best to say as little as possible," Jon Kabat-Zinn explained during this, the final session of the six-day retreat. "They probably don't want to hear that you meditated, sat around, ate gourmet meals, did yoga for six days and still managed to suffer. They just won't get it. So just don't tell them anything. Or if they really press, just tell them we meditated a lot." "story_title" => "The Many Faces of Judgment",
"story_summary" => "Get Healthy Living Alerts: "When you judge someone, you don't define them. You define yourself." -- Wayne Dyer No truer words have been spoken. I've always believed that I am one of the least judgmental people to exist on this planet; I'd swear to it in a court of law. And I know many people both personally and professionally who'd back me up on this. But alas, during a day at the beach last week with my best friends and their significant others, I saw myself in a different light. In my circle of friends, I've become known as the one who critiques, so everyone's always presenting their best selves. And I'm not talking inwardly; I'm talking about outward appearance. I am the person who has called my friend a day after I've seen her and told her to never wear a pair of jeans again because they looked terrible. I brought another friend to my hairdresser for highlights, and even paid for them. This became a topic of conversation during my beautiful day at the beach. As I was critiquing someone, my friend's husband called me judgmental. I was taken aback: "Not me!" But then, that funny little feeling appeared in the pit of my stomach that tells me I'm about to have an "A-ha!" moment and learn something new about myself. And in that moment, there was no denying that I was being judgmental. For years, I told myself I behaved this way because I was helping -- wanting the best for everyone. But in a moment, I knew differently. My judgment was hidden under the guise of helping. When I went home and spent a few days meditating on it, the question I asked myself was: "What do I feel about myself that comes up when I see someone who doesn't look as good as I think they should?" What I discovered was that for me, I equate grooming and looking your best with taking care of yourself. When I see someone who isn't doing their best, I start to feel a bit helpless, and I worry that it represents something more -- that they're not really doing well on the inside. Now, at times, this is true. But at times, this is the furthest thing from the truth. But the deeper discovery was painful. I grew up with mental illness in the background. Both my grandmother and aunt suffered a great deal, and they always looked unkempt. Those images stayed with me, obviously for a lifetime. For me, seeing someone who didn't look their best was painful; it meant they were ill. Now, I still believe we should be taking care of the outside -- self-care is important. However, with this discovery, I'm hoping to ease up on those around me, and also on myself. Stay tuned; I'll let you know if I'm successful! For more by Dr. Debbie Magids, click here[1].
