It hasn’t taken long—since December, in fact—for San Francisco vs. Seattle to become the NFL’s newest premier rivalry. It also will be a while before any other matchup in the league trumps it. PHOTOS: 15 sports rivalries on the rise[3] In the previous 11 seasons that the Seahawks and Niners have been together in the NFC West, the familiarity to breed contempt has always been there. Missing until late 2012, however, was both teams playing a high level of football at the same time. Now they're built to be Super Bowl contenders for a long time. The competitive fires between Harbaugh and Carroll were stoked before they got their current jobs. In the three seasons they were college coaching counterparts in the Pac-12, Harbaugh’s Stanford Cardinal went 2-1 against Carroll’s USC Trojans. The meme of "smart-school upstart" (Harabaugh) upending "big-school bully" (Carroll) helped set up the contrast for their NFL battle of will and wits. Carroll, with his rah-rah style and defensive acumen, took the Seahawks to a division title in his first season in 2010, albeit with a 7-9 record. Harbaugh joined the Niners a year later, and with his unwavering intensity and offensive foresight, put them on top. Not much separated the teams last season. San Francisco did two things a little bit better to get to the Super Bowl—finish a half-game higher in the standings and complete an improbable playoff comeback in Atlanta. After their sizzling late-season surges, both teams are well aware that they're close to winning it all this season. The coaches, the players under them and the decision-makers above them, have all acted like it. Harbaugh got in a jab early this month, pointing out that several Seahawks players have run into trouble with performance-enhancing drugs. “Play by the rules[4]” was his subtle directive to his team. In a not-so subtle response by one of those players who were suspended, Seahawks cornerback Brandon Browner said he wanted to “put his hands around Harbaugh’s neck[5].” As you would expect, Carroll, came back with nothing but praise for Harbaugh. “They’ve done a marvelous job since Jim took over and they’ve done it all on the field,” Carroll said. In an interesting twist, Carroll’s Trojans were the Goliath, but in the NFL, it’s Harbaugh’s 49ers with the big, bad reputation and the championship pedigree. The Seahawks are still chasing their first ring (their only Super Bowl appearance was in SB XL), and still trying to get the noisy Seattle faithful their first pro championship since 1979. The city of San Francisco, in addition to having five Lombardi Trophies and the reigning NFC champs, boasts the World Series champs from two of the past three years. Last year, Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman[6]—who played for Harbaugh at Stanford—identified the Niners’ coach as the “bully” in the present scenario. The outspoken Sherman is a perfect mouthpiece for Seattle in the rivalry: He strikes the right balance of playing the "disrespected" card while also having the swagger to reap on-field rewards. SCHEDULE: See when Seahawks, 49ers square off this season[7] Niners general manager Trent Baalke and Seahawks counterpart John Schneider have worked to keep up with each other as well. Both are dealing from positions of strength, because neither one has had to fix much this offseason. It’s not a coincidence that 49ers traded for a dynamic, versatile receiver, Anquan Boldin, in the same March week the Seahawks acquired Percy Harvin. Or that both teams reloaded their strong front sevens with more pass rushers. Or that the 49ers answered the Seahawks’ aggressiveness on the free-agent market by loading up on draft picks. As much as football is a team sport, an elite tete-a-tete still centers on marquee individual matchups. When we think about the heyday of New England Patriots vs. Indianapolis Colts, we think Tom Brady vs. Peyton Manning. Their personal duel for all-time supremacy has carried over to the Patriots-Denver Broncos series. Harbaugh vs. Carroll has been compelling for years, but the current quarterbacks—the Niners’ Colin Kaepernick and the Seahawks’ Russell Wilson—make the rivalry's future so much more exciting. Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III and Cam Newton may have their time soon, but Kaepernick and Wilson already have playoff victories. While we’re wondering if those others can be as efficient and durable, the 49ers and Seahawks are blessed with guys who can run but whose best asset is their strong, accurate arms. It’s hard to believe that Kaepernick and Wilson have dueled only once, a 42-13 Seahawks rout in Seattle last Dec. 23 in which Wilson was the much better quarterback. As both enter their second years as full-time starters, they already have the makeup of cool veteran leaders such as Brady and Manning, and they have the potential to match the latter two's passing accomplishments. IYER: Without Crabtree, Niners will be hard-pressed to sustain production[8] Just as much as Brady is an extension of Bill Belichick, and Manning was of Tony Dungy, Kaepernick and Wilson also embody their coaches' philosophies. From the time he became the full-time starter over Alex Smith in the middle of last season, Kaepernick has followed Harbaugh’s steely resolve that things be done the right way. Wilson, who was handpicked after a truly open competition in the preseason, carries Carroll’s enthusiasm and positive youthful energy. With leading men like that, 49ers-Seahawks is just getting warmed up as a riot of an act. Just in case we forgot which NFC West team went undefeated in division play last season, St. Louis Rams defensive end Chris Long provided a reminder last week. Prompted by cornerback Cortland Finnegan calling former Rams and current 49ers safety Craig Dahl “lame and weak,”[9] Long tweeted on June 12[10] that it had been “528 days” since his team last lost to San Francisco. St. Louis got a win and a tie against the Niners last season, swept Seattle and did the same to Arizona to go 5-0-1. The Rams announced that in just one year with Jeff Fisher, they were ready to step into the ring with the 49ers and Seahawks. The Rams, who have their own tough defense led by Long and Finnegan, can’t be ruled out as playing spoiler in the NFL's toughest division, but in for that to happen St. Louis must win outside the division (it was 2-8 last year) and get quarterback Sam Bradford to raise his play with an improved supporting cast of skill players. The 49ers and Seahawks are on the short list of favorites to win the NFC because of Kaepernick and Wilson. A true breakout season from Bradford will give the West a good chance of having three playoff teams. The reality, though, is that for several teams, the post-minicamp confidence and excitement will soon turn to frustration and disappointment. Based on what we've seen so far this offseason, it's time to play a little game called "Trust vs. Bust," in which we identify things we trust a little more, and just don't trust enough, about each team. More trust, less bust In just one season, Panthers quarterback Cam Newton went from the NFL's premier young gun to a forgotten man as we gushed about the 2012 draft class and the new darling of the '11 class, the 49ers' Colin Kaepernick. But scouts and analysts expect Newton to put it all together in Year 3 as a passer, runner and leader and have a monster season. Keeping former QB coach Mike Shula around as the offensive coordinator helped Newton maintain his comfort level, and it's only natural that Newton has matured as a teammate. He's good enough to carry Carolina to wild-card contention. … The defense can give Newton help with elite pass-rush potential with Charles Johnson and Greg Hardy, but the tackle rotation must be better at protecting middle linebacker Luke Kuechly. The Panthers don't have the secondary. The Chargers have compiled a great coaching staff with head coach Mike McCoy and coordinators Ken Whisenhunt and John Pagano. McCoy and Whisenhunt have the offensive acumen to get Philip Rivers back on track, and San Diego was smart to keep Pagano in charge of its 3-4 defense. … There are some concerns, however, including too much youth up front and a lack of durability at the skill positions. The Rams can't say they don't have field-stretching weapons for their home dome after bringing in tight end Jared Cook and wide receiver Tavon Austin. Also, we know what happens when Jeff Fisher gets another year to mold a defense. … Despite dealing with so many changes during his career, it's time for QB Sam Bradford to put up. St. Louis also needs someone to fill the big backfield void created by Steven Jackson's departure to the Falcons. The Giants' Super Bowl victory two seasons ago wasn't a surprise. Neither was their missing the playoffs last season. We're used to them being the most consistently inconsistent team in the NFL. Such a big setback tends to set up Tom Coughlin, Eli Manning and Co. for a big comeback. … Remember their strengths in the offensive line, running game and pass rush? Until those are rebuilt to their liking, it's on Manning to reprise his 2011 play. Forget the Cowboys' offensive play-calling controversy—pushing the ball downfield with Tony Romo, the overall passing game and the O-line aren't issues under Bill Callahan. Dallas' big problem is giving up more big plays on defense than Romo produces. New coordinator Monte Kiffin's 4-3 zone approach will limit the damage. … The troublesome health of running back DeMarco Murray is a worry as the Cowboys try to employ better ball control. The Buccaneers did their best to improve their pass defense with the high-profile additions of Darrelle Revis and Dashon Goldson. The real keys to improvement, however, will be two youngsters: rookie Johnthan Banks, who will make an immediate impact as the nickel or No. 2 corner, and slobberknocking second-year safety Mark Barron. For the second straight year, GM Mark Dominik has found the right mix of old and new. … The Bucs' chances, though, rest on quarterback Josh Freeman cutting down his interceptions, going full throttle with his great supporting cast and preventing any chance of being replaced by rookie Mike Glennon. There's much to like about the Bengals now that Marvin Lewis has finally gotten them to the playoffs in back-to-back years. Fans should be excited about how much better receiver A.J. Green and QB Andy Dalton can get as rookies Giovani Bernard and Tyler Eifert add depth and versatility. Cincinnati won't need to rely on Green so much, and that should open him up for huge things in Year 3. … The defense's main strength, the pass rush, is there, but the back seven has to come together. James Harrison as a 4-3 outside linebacker? Taylor Mays at strong safety? It's hard to be sold on either. Three reasons to think the Colts aren't just a one-year wild-card wonder: Andrew Luck, Andrew Luck, Andrew Luck. It's scary to think how effective he was last year as a rookie despite not being all that efficient. He's set up to be better buoyed by the run and pass protection. … Head coach Chuck Pagano, who's back at work full time, has work cut out with the team's 3-4 defense. The pass rush and pass coverage could hold them back in a loaded AFC. We know the Falcons are good, and sneaky pickups such as Steven Jackson and Osi Umenyiora make them better. Just like every defense that was beaten by San Francisco last season, Atlanta's will be more disciplined against the read option. … If we're going to nitpick, we'll point out that the offensive line is a bit shaky. The Texans have a real-deal No. 2 wide receiver to Andre Johnson in rookie DeAndre Hopkins. If DeVier Posey can come back, watch out for QB Matt Schaub hitting a second passing gear. … It doesn't look like Ed Reed will be ready for the start of the regular season, and let's remember Houston lost a pretty good free safety in Glover Quin. So the Patriots have re-mixed their receiving corps, and they're not sure when they'll have tight end Rob Gronkowski—ah, who are we kidding? They still have the one constant who can help them maintain their offensive edge: Tom Brady. Whatever Tim Tebow does will be gravy. … Bill Belichick has been piecing together his defense with the draft and castoffs; now it's time for results. There's no reason New England should be poor in coverage and mediocre in the pass rush anymore. We know the 49ers are on the short list to get to the Super Bowl again, because of improved depth to go with an improved Kaepernick, a mighty offensive line, and a playmaking defense. We will be a little worried about how they make up for Michael Crabtree's lost production. The versatile Delanie Walker also will be missed. As long as the Seahawks start saying no to drugs—a potentially divisive locker-room issue that can't afford to let linger—they can't complain about their offseason. Just as Pete Carroll has, we're gushing about Percy Harvin working with Russell Wilson. We like that other rookie steal from a season ago, Bobby Wagner, who's getting the attention he deserves as a premier inside linebacker. The Packers' defense is too talented and too well-coached to look as silly as it did under Dom Capers at the end of the playoffs. The drafting of Datone Jones will help set them up to assist Clay Matthews on the right side. … Green Bay added some running backs and reshuffled its line, but we still don't know if those moves will mean fewer hits on Aaron Rodgers. The Broncos hit the jackpot with Wes Welker. A tough inside receiver who works hard to produce is just what Peyton Manning needed. Sure, he had guys who caught a lot of passes from him last season, but Manning is at his best when he has a dominant slot option—see Brandon Stokley and Dallas Clark. As for rookie running back Montee Ball, see Edgerrin James and Joseph Addai. … This sounds like the Giants' situation: It's good Manning is there to win shootouts, because there are concerns about how the non-Von Miller pass rushers and secondary will hold up. The Super Bowl champion Ravens are going through a veteran exodus, but what got them to the peak remains intact. That would be the returning offensive core—Joe Flacco, Torrey Smith, Jacoby Jones, Ray Rice, the talented tight ends, and the now-cohesive grunts up front. … New defenders Arthur Brown, Elvis Dumervil, Matt Elam and Michael Huff aren't Dannell Ellerbe, Paul Kruger, Bernard Pollard and Ed Reed yet, but they might not need to be. More bust, less trust The Redskins took the league by storm with their offensive and defensive wrinkles last season; now comes the hard part. In a super-competitive division, staying the same—they've done little to be different—makes it difficult to stay ahead. … There is some good news; we're buying into the fact that Robert Griffin III will indeed be the healthy, running-around RG3 for Week 1. It's on Christian Ponder to make the Vikings better. Adrian Peterson did his best to make Ponder a caretaker, but now that playmakers Kyle Rudolph, Greg Jennings and Cordarelle Patterson have been added, we need to see Ponder light it up. …. We'll point out that Minnesota's strength still lies on defense, where cleanup safety Harrison Smith is in for a huge Year 2. The Steelers' defense is caught in the crossroads of rebuilding. The biggest concern is the secondary; Keenan Lewis is gone, and it's uncertain whether Troy Polamalu, Ryan Clark and Ike Taylor can hold up and make plays the way they once could. … On the bright side, the offense, with Le'Veon Bell and without Mike Wallace, can become more of the balanced, power-running unit that coach Mike Tomlin wants. We like the additions to the secondary, but overall the Saints have a whole lot of 4-3 misfits in Rob Ryan's 3-4, which sets them up to have a similar mess that Ryan left the Cowboys. … New Orleans should at least reestablish its strong offensive identity with Sean Payton restoring the running game and aggressiveness to support Drew Brees. Rookie Terron Armstead has the makings of an elite left tackle. No, we're not worried too much about Chip Kelly's Eagles offense and the fact he hasn't come close to determining his quarterback. Philly will move the ball well in some form with its speedy skill players. The bigger issue is asking for the new 3-4 defense to come together when the pass-rushing holdovers are better suited for the 4-3, and a revamped secondary that's still plagued by injuries and inconsistency. We're starting to believe that Carson Palmer is a really good fit to solve the Cardinals' quarterback problem; he's a good fit in Bruce Arians' offense, which is tailored to his strengths. We're not buying, however, that Arizona's defense is better off without former coordinator Ray Horton, even though players say they like what they're doing under Todd Bowles more. That transition will be enough to keep them behind a loaded top three in the NFC West. Alex Smith makes the Chiefs better at quarterback, and they still have plenty of good players at almost every position. So what's the problem with believing in a worst-to-wild-card scenario? Andy Reid. In a time of fast-paced offenses, it was concerning that the Eagles, with their speed, couldn't keep up. Kansas City doesn't have the same receiving pop around its QB, and if Reid goes back to a conservative, calculated approach with Smith, it won't work as well as it did for Smith in San Francisco. The 49ers had a similar setup on paper, but they were much more innovative and talented. Sorry, but we're just not buying that new Bears coach Marc Trestman is suddenly going to push Jay Cutler to the elite level. We've seen Cutler tease us before when he's had great talent and equally good coaching around him, only to let us down. The Bears remain limited by their offensive line and running game. They also can't count on the defense to bail them now that Brian Urlacher and Lovie Smith are gone. The Lions talk a big game. We like the confidence expressed by Nick Fairley, Reggie Bush and Matt Stafford. The swagger that coach Jim Schwartz brought made them a playoff team two years ago. lsat season, though, the brashness resulted in a lack of discipline and stability. They're walking that fine line again, and they're set up to stand up a little better, but there's a feeling they'll eventually fall. You might have heard the Dolphins spent some money on their offense and defense this offseason. You might have also heard they are a hot sleeper playoff team. Sure, there's a lot to like about Ryan Tannehill, but even though he's working with an improved receiving corps, he's just not quite ready to challenge his other '12 draft classmates for a playoff spot. We love the young energy the Jaguars have with David Caldwell as GM and Gus Bradley as coach. But the quarterback battle between Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne doesn't inspire confidence in a quick turnaround. Look for Jacksonville to work on finding the other key pieces—offensive skill players, pass rush—and be in position to snag its true franchise passer in the 2014 draft. The Bills haven't been able to find a rhythm as they constantly change; that's why they haven't found themselves in the playoffs. They are rebooting twice on offense with Doug Marrone's scheming and EJ Manuel's rawness. They can't make up their mind whether to go with a 3-4 or 4-3 defense; they're back to the former for now. You have to be stable to get stable, and that won't happen in Buffalo in '13. The Titans like their new defensive attitude, and they got tougher on offense with a nastier interior line led by Andy Levitre and Chance Warmack. We need to see a lot more of the old Chris Johnson and a new Jake Locker to make any of that matter. Rex Ryan is on thin ice with the Jets, and the hiring of Marty Mornhinweg as offensive coordinator to sort out their quarterback mess didn't help. That side of the ball is bound to cost Ryan his job, even with his continued great influence on the defense. We're down with what Browns GM Michael Lombardi once thought: We, too, aren't quite sold on Brandon Weeden. Or Jason Campbell. Or Brian Hoyer. And we're not sure if any of those QBs will benefit from a fully healthy Trent Richardson. The Raiders have done fairly well in rebuilding their defense, but it's clear they have no idea what they are doing on offense. They've put their faith in Matt Flynn over Palmer. They're also moving on from Darren McFadden being a reliable big-time back.", "story_date" => "2013-06-12 03:59:00", "source" => "SPORTING NEWS" ), array( "id" => "2013060900001649", "provider_id" => "135", "story_seo_url" => "http://www.sportingnews.com/nfl/story/2013-06-09/cortland-finnegan-st-louis-rams-detroit-tigers-nfl-super-bowl-xlviii", "story_title" => "Super Bowl: Cortland Finnegan makes his Super Bowl XLVIII selections - NFL", "story_summary" => "Cortland Finnegan has made his 2014 Super Bowl selection, and it's not a straight-and-narrow pick by any means. "If we don't win it, I'll take the Lions winning it next," Finnegan told the Detroit Free Press[1]. There might be a little bit of bias involved with his selections, too. Finnegan plays for the St. Louis Rams, who went 7-8-1 in coach Jeff Fisher's first season in charge. Formerly the coach of the Tennessee Titans, Fisher was Finnegan's coach for the first five years of his career On the other side of the pick, Lions' coach Jim Schwartz was Fisher's defensive coordinator when Finnegan broke into the league in 2006. In Schwartz' final year with the team before leaving for Detroit, Finnegan made the Pro Bowl, his only all-star selection to date. So (Jim) Schwartz, he’s always going to put together a good team.” Detroit also missed the playoffs, finishing tied for last in the NFC with a 4-12 record. Are 'Skins ready to go bust? What offseason work tells us - NFL", "story_summary" => "It's June, right before the NFL shuts down until training camp, and that means every team is a Super Bowl contender.
