Then again, sometimes they get it oh-so-right.BuzzFeed, the world's preeminent list maker -- and butt of more than few Onion jokes -- can turn just about any event into an odd-numbered countdown, even the U.S. Open. In fact, when we first saw this list of The 11 Kinds Of People You'll Meet At Every Golf Tournament, our reaction wasn't disbelief, but a general interest in how many we witnessed this year at Merion. From the guys who yell, sometimes obnoxiously, after every tee shot, to the perfectly dressed fans, we've seen them all. Unfortunately, sometimes we even become them. Like the guy who gets rocked by a stray shot.Sorry max.Follow @DerekEvers!function{var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName[0];if){js=d.createElement;js.id=id;js.src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore;}};Mon, 17 Jun 2013 10:26:00 -0400http://dailyme.com/story/2013061700001540Justin Rose was ready at 'moment's' notice: Local Knowledge: Golf Digesthttp://dailyme.com/story/2013061700001542By Tim RosaforteFrom the June 17 edition of Golf World Monday:As he prepared last week at Lake Nona for the 113th U.S. Open, Justin Rose did more than beat balls, work out and review his game plan for Merion. He watched a YouTube download of "The Empire Strikes Back." The scene that sport psychologist Gio Valiante wanted Rose to absorb was Yoda's famous discussion with Luke Skywalker. "I wanted him to know he was ready," Valiante said Sunday from his home in Orlando. "That he was finally mature enough to come into his own."Rose proved ready, willing and able for the challenge not only of Merion, but also of Phil Mickelson, the star-crossed U.S. Open hero who once again finished second -- for a record sixth time.Related: Rose delivers for a golden generationNothing got in the way of Rose's two-stroke victory. Not the karma of Phil's flying home for his daughter's middleschool graduation. Not the hole-out by Mickelson on the 10th hole or the Philadelphia fans who wanted Lefty to win not only on Father's Day, but his 43rd birthday."If anybody deserves to do it, Justin does," said Tony Jacklin, who 43 years ago was the last English golfer to win the U.S. Open. "He showed his true colors."Rose, 32, had been trending toward this, starting with wins at Jack Nicklaus' tournament and Tiger Woods' tournament in 2010, a FedEx Cup playoff event in 2011 and a World Golf Championships event in '12.Last September he proved to himself he could make pressure putts by beating Mickelson in a pivotal Ryder Cup singles match. Two weeks later he knocked off Tiger Woods and Lee Westwood in succession to win the World Golf Final in Turkey."Adam Scott sent me a fantastic message after he won the Masters saying, 'Your time is coming soon,' '' Rose said. "He's a wise man."The consensus is that Rose is also a good man, as attested both by Jacklin and Nick Faldo, the last Englishman to win a major. Just two weeks ago Faldo had lunch with Rose in the Muirfield Village clubhouse. Faldo came away thinking Rose had everything right in his life. "He's a classy guy," said Faldo. "No matter how many times he got knocked down, he still had self-belief."The reference was not only to 21 straight missed cuts at the start of his professional career, but also the loss of his father, Ken, to leukemia, 11 years ago. For seven years Rose had no wins on the PGA Tour. Now he has five quality wins in four years. The only question remaining was whether he was competitively tough enough to close out a major and that was answered by the way he played the 72nd hole yesterday.Related: Sunday's winners and losers from Merion"It was Hoganesque," said Colin Montgomerie. From just right of the Ben Hogan plaque, Rose rose to the occasion and hit the type of shot into the 18th green that, historically speaking, will define his career. Even more than the hole-out at Birkdale 15 years ago, even more than the reaction to the putts that beat Mickelson at Medinah."I thought this is my moment," Rose said. "I saw the photo a million times and suddenly it was me. I'm just so glad it worked out."Ready are you, Justin Rose? Ready he was.Follow @TimRosaforte!function{var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName[0];if){js=d.createElement;js.id=id;js.src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore;}};Mon, 17 Jun 2013 09:02:00 -0400http://dailyme.com/story/2013061700001542Justin Rose Invokes Ben Hogan, Wins US Openhttp://dailyme.com/story/2013061700000848Justin Rose walked the 18th fairway and thought of Ben Hogan, and a chance to emulate one of the most famous shots in golf.    Mon, 17 Jun 2013 03:08:58 -0400http://dailyme.com/story/2013061700000848Column - Merion, the Little Course That Could, Did.http://dailyme.com/story/2013061700000868Merion Golf Club did more than just hold its own.    Mon, 17 Jun 2013 02:59:24 -0400http://dailyme.com/story/2013061700000868Heartbreak Continues for Eternal Bridesmaid Mickelsonhttp://dailyme.com/story/2013061700000881There was no big birthday celebration for Phil Mickelson who turned 43 at Merion Golf Club on Sunday, only another case of heartache at the U.S. Open.    Mon, 17 Jun 2013 00:29:28 -0400http://dailyme.com/story/2013061700000881Day Stays Positive After Another Major Close Callhttp://dailyme.com/story/2013061700000891Jason Day suffered another near-miss in a major at the U.S. Open on Sunday but the Australian knows he has time on his side to win one of golf's blue riband events.    Mon, 17 Jun 2013 00:29:20 -0400http://dailyme.com/story/2013061700000891A First, and Yet Another Second, at the U.S. Open - Slide Showhttp://dailyme.com/story/2013061700000900Justin Rose of England lifted the trophy for his first major title, and Phil Mickelson was second for the sixth time.    Mon, 17 Jun 2013 00:10:55 -0400http://dailyme.com/story/2013061700000900Golf Saved My Life: Claudia Mazzucco: Golf Digesthttp://dailyme.com/story/2013061700001555Studying the game of golf helps Claudia live with autism.Mon, 17 Jun 2013 00:00:00 -0400http://dailyme.com/story/2013061700001555U.S. Open: The Shots That Defined The U.S. Open: Golf Digesthttp://dailyme.com/story/2013061700003286A look back at the shots -- both good and bad -- that shaped the outcome at Merion.Mon, 17 Jun 2013 00:00:00 -0400http://dailyme.com/story/2013061700003286Rose Revels in Validation of U.S. Open Winhttp://dailyme.com/story/2013061700000905After the touching salute to his father, the teary victory call to his mother back in England and the kiss of the silver trophy, Justin Rose treasured the validation of winning the U.S. Open for his first major championship.    Sun, 16 Jun 2013 23:35:18 -0400http://dailyme.com/story/2013061700000905Player From Ireland Wins His First European Titlehttp://dailyme.com/story/2013061700000917Simon Thornton of Ireland beat Tjaart Van der Walt of South Africa in the Najeti Hotels Open in St.-Omer, France, for his first European Tour title.    Sun, 16 Jun 2013 23:30:48 -0400http://dailyme.com/story/2013061700000917Rose Holds Off Mickelson in U.S. Openhttp://dailyme.com/story/2013061700000921Justin Rose of England clung to a narrow lead to defeat Phil Mickelson at the United States Open at Merion Golf Club, taking home his first major championship.    Sun, 16 Jun 2013 23:29:13 -0400http://dailyme.com/story/2013061700000921Heartbreak on His Birthday for Mickelson in Openhttp://dailyme.com/story/2013061700000930This wasn't the way it was supposed to end, not on Phil Mickelson's birthday and not at Merion Golf Club, where history will record with little fanfare outside of England that Justin Rose won his first major championship.    Sun, 16 Jun 2013 22:53:40 -0400http://dailyme.com/story/2013061700000930Steve Stricker’s bid to become oldest U.S. Open winner ends early on Merion’s second hole | Devil Ball Golfhttp://dailyme.com/story/2013061700000570Your browser does not support iframes.ARDMORE, Pa. — At 46 years, three months and 24 days, Steve Stricker came into Sunday's action with a chance at becoming the oldest U.S. Open winner in the event's 113-year history. But somewhere, Hale Irwin — the winner of the 1990 U.S. Open at Medinah at 45 years and 15 days — can rest easy. Stricker's bid to unseat him hit an early snag in the final round at Merion Golf Club as the Wisconsin resident carded a triple-bogey 8 on the par-5 second. He'd soldier through the disappointment to finish with a score of 76 and a tied for eighth finish with Luke Donald, his highest at the U.S. Open since placing fifth in both 1998 and 1999.Still, the nightmare second hole will be a hard one to forget."It's just the nature of the game, I guess," Stricker said after the round. "It puts you in your place rather quickly at times."Stricker came into the round as one of the sentimental favorites for golf fans. A 12-time tour winner with over $37 million in career earnings, Stricker recently cut back his schedule to spend more time with his family. The U.S. Open was only his second start since The Masters, but scores of 71, 69 and 70 allowed him to entertain thoughts of becoming the oldest first-time major winner in golf history. He entered the day at +1, two shots behind another 40-something, leader Phil Mickelson. But it wasn't to be. After recording a par on the first hole, Stricker pushed his first drive on the second across Ardmore Avenue, the tight right-side boundary that felled Rory McIlroy during Saturday's third round. Stricker's shot dribbled across the street, through a chain-link fence and into a private backyard. After hitting a provisional tee shot, Stricker went over to the roadway to inspect what had happened on the first drive."We confirmed it went across the road," said an official after seeing the golfer. "We can get the ball for you if it helps your peace of mind.""Isn't it right there?" said Stricker, pointing at a spot in the yard.An Andy Frain usher picked up the ball and returned it across the roadway. Stricker inspected it, saw that it was indeed his and then tossed it toward the fans as some sort of morbid souvenir. It hit the ground and a man brought it back to his hand with the handle of his umbrella.Meanwhile, back in the fairway, Stricker addressed the provisional shot that had become his new reality. He tried to make up some ground with a four-iron, but then he got out in front of it and that ball went across the roadway too for another one-stroke penalty. Stricker's shoulders slumped. Merion had sunk his teeth into his ankles out of the starting blocks, just like it had done to many golfers who were younger than him.Stricker would hit a decent putt to save triple bogey on the hole, but then he faced the hellhound that was the long par-3 third and scored bogey after a stiff wind knocked his tee shot into a bunker. A bogey on five would sink him further."It's just not the start I was looking for, making triple, and a good triple, on the second hole of the day," Stricker said. "And then you've got to turn right into No. 3 and it's a 260-yard shot into the wind ... Starting four over after three holes really wasn't what I had in mind today."Despite his early struggles, fans in the galleries tried to will Stricker into some history. Golf fans often look for avatars of themselves out on the course and it wasn't hard for most to relate to the family man making a push for one last moment of ultimate glory."Do it for all us old guys," one man yelled."Hang in there, Strick!" said a few others."There's a lot of golf left, Steve!" reminded yet another.Stricker was noticeably disappointed with the way he was playing, but the encouragement continued throughout the round. He recorded birdie on the short 13th and a birdie bid that came up just short in front of the big crowd on No. 17 drew big cheers. Stricker acknowledged the crowd with an appreciative smile, just like he had the gallery that cheered him for saving triple bogey on the second."The Philadelphia fans were incredible this week," Stricker said. "I got a tremendous amount of support, more than usual I would say. They kind of took to my backside, I guess and tried to root me along, even after the start I had today."Stricker said he hadn't yet gotten over the disappointment of missing out on such a golden opportunity but that it "won't take me long to get over this.""Golf is not the thing in my life as it once was," said Stricker, whose family made the trip and enjoyed the week with him in suburban Philadelphia. "That was the reason why I scaled back."Sure, I'm disappointed I didn't play better today and have a chance to win, but like I say, it's second in my life now or even further back. We've got kids and wives and other things like that that's more important. So I can get over this rather quickly, I think."Want more from Merion? Instead, Phil Mickelson is a six-time runner-up in the tournament you most want to win as an American.Sun, 16 Jun 2013 21:31:38 -0400http://dailyme.com/story/2013061700000243Merion Moment: Crowd rushes 18th to see Phil Mickelson take second at the U.S. Open (again) | Devil Ball Golfhttp://dailyme.com/story/2013061700000577ARDMORE, Pa. — One woman ducked under the rope and then she was followed by another. They were halted by a Merion Golf Club official and told to go back to where they belonged. The women agreed, but when they wheeled around, the looks on their faces said that, no, they probably didn't have to comply with the man's request. Their initial scamper had burst the dam on Sunday night and an entire wave of reinforcements were pushing them back onto the 18th fairway.Who could blame them? If you pay the high ticket prices to get into the U.S. Open, you're not going to willingly miss the tournament's biggest moment. The eager golf fans rushed the ridge on the approach to the green, craning their to get a closer look at what might end up being one of the most famous shots in golf history.Phil Mickelson, the perennial U.S. Open bridesmaid, was looking at a 30-yard wedge to sink a birdie and force a Monday playoff with Justin Rose.It really was the proverbial scene as we all made our way forward. A woman yelled at her husband that he shouldn't dare push her into the sand trap. A few kids scampered through that trap and took positions near the top like they were playing in the dunes at the state park. More and people streamed in from the high grounds up the fairway. One of the most famous golf clubs in the country was being transformed into Bonnaroo. There is strength in numbers, so people whipped out the camera phones they had been warned to keep in their cars or check with security all week. They jabbered at each other in the excited accents that usually call the concourses of Citizens Bank Park and The Linc home, and then they shouted encouragement at Mickelson, who was up ahead on the green, looking at all the angles. Mickelson turned 43 on Sunday and the galleries around almost every hole had greeted him with a serenade of "Happy Birthday." But not this one. There was too much at stake here and it made you wonder about all the fans at those earlier holes. Didn't they know all those concentration-breaking moments like the double-bogey third and fifth holes would turn out to be just as important? Wouldn't a better birthday present have been to just shut the hell up and let the man work? You know what happened next, of course: Mickelson attempted the shot and it did not become one of the most famous shots in golf history. The ball sped its way well wide of the hole and Mickelson stopped his run up to the green to jam his finger tips into his temple, the complete opposite reaction he and the crowd had been hoping for. The 282 shots before this one were about to be summed into another entry in the "Phil Mickelson's U.S. Open disappointments" file.Somewhere in a room with a television, Justin Rose cheered.Back in the mob that was standing on the ridge, it was hard not to view the rush of the fans as some big metaphor for Mickelson's history at the U.S. Open. A lot of movement, a lot of action, a lot of excitement for a nice runner-up check and another anti-climactic moment that probably makes him appreciate those three green jackets even more. The fans didn't linger long, dispersing well before Mickelson hit his two putts for his fifth bogey or worse of the day. Some hightailed it to the parking lot shuttles. Others headed to see the Ben Hogan 1-iron plate that's embedded in the middle of the 18th fairway. A few walked over to see the view from the par-3 17th before descending the staircase into Merion's famous quarry.Phil Mickelson had blown another chance at a U.S. Open and there were other things to see.Want more from Merion? Rose had his magical moment on the 72nd hole at Royal Birkdale, holing a shot for birdie from the rough to finish T-4, winning low amateur honors thanks to that Sunday 69.The now 32-year-old turned pro the day after that performance, and now, 15 years later, he is a major champion.Sun, 16 Jun 2013 19:52:00 -0400http://dailyme.com/story/2013061700000582McIlroy Miserable at Merion With Awful Resultshttp://dailyme.com/story/2013061700000966Rory McIlroy started the U.S. Open with a run up the Rocky steps.    Sun, 16 Jun 2013 19:50:43 -0400http://dailyme.com/story/2013061700000966U.S. Open, Sunday recap: Justin Rose wins his first major championship at Merion | Devil Ball Golfhttp://dailyme.com/story/2013061700000584• Justin Rose played one of those final rounds that only works at the U.S. Open, making five birdies and five bogeys to post a round of even-par 70 on a golf course that wasn't budging a bit. Rose's 1-over total was good enough for a two-shot victory and a first major championship win.• We all knew it was Phil Mickelson's U.S. Open to lose heading into Sunday, and while he fought as hard as he could, it just wasn't enough, and a missed birdie putt on the 16th all but ended it for Phil. This is now his sixth runner-up finish at the U.S. Open, the most of any player in the history of the event.• Tiger Woods left Merion with another disappointing major championship, finishing 13-over par, his highest total at the U.S. Open in his professional career. Tiger's feel was way off all week, missing short putts and hitting chips fat all over Merion, and we will have to wait until the British Open to see if Woods can add another major title to his résumé.Any winning round is the round of the day, but besides Rose you'd have to give the honor to Jason Dufner, who shot 3-under 67 despite a triple-bogey on the 15th. Dufner had the low round of the day and moved up 21 spots to have his second straight T-4 at the U.S. Open.Your browser does not support iframes.Phil Mickelson needed some magic on Sunday at Merion, and got it on the 10th hole with this eagle from 76 yards. While he didn't go on to win, this shot got him back in the golf tournament. On Father's Day, Justin Rose was able to snag his first major championship, but sadly his father wasn't around. His dad, Ken, died of leukemia in 2002 and surely this was a gesture to him. While Rory McIlroy wasn't much of a story in the sense of a winner, he did make a highlight on Sunday by breaking his golf club after a rough 11th hole. The good news about the U.S. Open ending is we only have to wait a few weeks until the next major championship. The British Open kicks off on July 14 at Muirfield, so get your golf rest before we get another shot at a historical major winner.More U.S. Open coverage from Yahoo! Golf is simply not fair.Phil Mickelson, sentimental favorite and leader/co-leader every night of the U.S. Open, the guy who's somehow golf's everyman despite being a private-jet-flying multimillionaire, has once again fallen just short at the U.S. Open.Justin Rose, an exceptional golfer whose time as a major winner has come, triumphed by two shots over Mickelson. Rose finished at +1 by playing smart golf, and even in the moments in which he had opportunities to fall short, controlled the damage. When he finished out with an unlikely par on 18, the toughest hole on the course, he dabbed at his eyes, the enormity of the moment finally catching up with him. From there, it was just a matter of time. Mickelson hadn't even finished out the 17th when Rose tapped in his par putt on 18, so Rose had to watch as Mickelson tried to birdie either one of the two final holes to force a playoff. He came so close, so very close ... but yet again, fell short. He wasn't alone. This was a tournament in which each of the challengers coming into Sunday had a defining moment that cost them an opportunity:— Luke Donald struck a spectator on #3, and proceeded to card over-par scores on that and the next three holes;— Steve Stricker hit two shots out of bounds on #2;— Jason Day lipped a virtual tap-in on 18;— Hunter Mahan pushed an easy short putt past the hole on 15.Much will be written in the coming hours and days about Mickelson, his would-be career-defining shot, and whether he "deserved" to win this. Maybe he did, maybe he didn't. Either way, Rose did. This marked a significant career breakthrough for Rose, who had placed in the top 10 in two of the last five majors. Whether this is the start of a tremendous major-winning career for Rose, or whether Rose is stepping into the shoes of Stewart Cink, winning the 2009 British Open that everyone had wanted to go to Tom Watson, is a story for another day. In a week in which most of the best in golf surrendered to the brutal rough and treacherous greens of Merion, Rose was just good enough to win. -Follow Jay Busbee on Twitter at @jaybusbee.-More U.S. Open coverage from Yahoo! He usually walks around with a big grin on his face, giving that famous thumbs-up move to any fan that will look his way.Early in his final round at the U.S. Open, Phil was not happy, and it turned out it was where the tees were set on the third hole. A par-3 that is said to play just 256 yards, Mickelson remarked after his tee shot on No. 4 to someone with the USGA that he couldn't even reach the green from where they placed the tees ."That was terrible," Phil said. "274 ? We can't even reach it."Mickelson did make a double-bogey on the hole, and while he followed it up with a great tee shot on the par-5 4th hole en route to a birdie he was still thinking about that previous hole as he went on with his round.Sun, 16 Jun 2013 18:10:11 -0400http://dailyme.com/story/2013061700000602Luke Donald’s errant shot tags a volunteer in the head | Devil Ball Golfhttp://dailyme.com/story/2013061700000606Your browser does not support iframes. You gotta keep your head on a swivel when you're at a golf tournament, as you never know quite when a ball's coming your way.
