"We're exploring [the game's design] from a perspective where we can take that from a multiplayer standpoint - it's going to have this four-player battle mode that I think is going to be very interesting."Nintendo has not confirmed a platform and release date for the new Steel Diver at this point in time, though CEO Satoru Iwata said last week during E3 that the game would be out this fiscal year . "We are to blame. We relaxed our [marketing] efforts, so the consumers today still cannot understand what's so good and unique about the Wii U," Iwata said."We have been unsuccessful in coming up with one single software with which people can understand, 'OK, this is really different.' As long as people have hands-on [experience], they can appreciate the value of the Wii U, but because there's not software that's simple and obvious for people as 'Wii Sports' for the Wii, potential consumers do not feel like trying the Wii U."The Wii U console sold 3.45 million units worldwide for the 2012-13 fiscal year, which ended March 2013. Nintendo cut its Wii U sales forecast in January as a result of lower-than-anticipated sales. Expectations were set for 4 million units sold, down from an initial target of 5.5 million. The publisher predicts that it will sell 9 million Wii U consoles worldwide over the course of the coming financial year. Plans to return the company to profitability were outlined in its full-year earnings report, which focused on releasing "key" first-party titles during the second half of 2013 and through next year. The company has also said it will improve Wii U sales by "communicating the compelling nature of our hardware and software" through Miiverse. The Wii U sold 425,000 units during its first week of launch, 50,000 consoles short of the original Wii's first-week sales tally of 475,000 units in 2006. To date, over 40 million original Wii consoles have been sold in the US.Nintendo recently announced Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze at its Nintendo Direct event, which took place during E3. A source has told Polygon that the Battlefield publisher has let go a "small number" of employees recently. This source said fewer than 20 employees were affected by the job cuts, which are supposedly related to the company-wide restructuring effort that EA began months ago. This move resulted in a 10 percent reduction in the publisher's total workforce--or approximately 900 people. It is unclear which department or departments the cuts came from, though a game research analyst said on Twitter that he had been laid off today. EA is not the only company cutting jobs. Yesterday, Square Enix confirmed that Hitman developer IO Interactive had laid off 50 percent of its total workforce and canceled multiple projects as it refocuses on development of a new AAA Hitman title. Complexity has signed Glinsman to a 8-month deal instead of the industry-standard one-year contract, as to lineup all of Complexity’s players under the same time frame. Glinsman joins Complexity as their new top-laner, replacing Nicholas Wu "Nickwu" Smith who was removed from the team recently. Glinsman, former star of the now defunct League Championship Series upstart Team MRN, has been staying with the Complexity team at their team house in Los Angeles for the last three weeks since MRN's disbandment. Glinsman’s time at the house has proved to be a fruitful relationship between the Complexity players and management, leading to today’s announcement."After the post-LCS closure of Team MRN, Megazero needed a place to stay," Complexity Owner Jason Lake told GameSpot. "Our guys offered a spot at the coL.LoL team house here in LA. There was immediate chemistry and everyone was very impressed with his attitude, work ethic and skill. We're very happy to have Patrick on the team and wish Nickwu the very best in the future."Since MRN's tumble out of the LCS, Glinsman has been a sub on Cloud 9, currently the only undefeated team in the North American Season 3 Summer Split. Complexity, the other team knocked out of this year's North American LCS, is relying on Glinsman’s big playmaking ability to lead them back into the big leagues. Glinsman feels he has found the right team to mesh with, and his time to return as a starter. "People are curious as to why I would choose Complexity over other teams, and honestly, they have the highest potential of any team," Glinsman told GameSpot. "Just practicing with them in scrims, I can tell the difference between Complexity and other teams. They take it seriously, and more importantly, they learn from their mistakes and are always improving. "Just recently, we had a pretty impressive display in the MLG Qualifiers and we hope to win MLG as a whole. Something people don't realize is, if you're going to be living in a house with your team and you want to easily communicate and improve, you have to be friends with your teammates. I love all the members of Complexity and I hope together we will re-qualify for LCS next season!"Glinsman replaces Smith, brother of his former teammate on MRN, Clark "ClakeyD" Douglas Smith. While both teams only squared off against each other three times during LCS, Glinsman knows he has a tough act to follow."Nickwu was an exceptional top-laner and in the LCS, he carried his team through some pretty grim looking games," Glinsman said. "Nick has always been a good friend as he's the brother of my former teammate, ClakeyD. I'll do my best to make everyone proud, especially Nickwu and ClakeyD because they're pretty amazing people!"With Riot's League Championship Series as the pinnacle of League of Legends competition, returning to the league is Complexity's ultimate goal. Teams who have failed to qualify for LCS have been seen to disband entirely a short time after, or make heavy roster changes. This is not the plan for Complexity."LCS is obviously the pinnacle and goal for each team but it's not the only opportunity," Lake said, adamant about supporting players in the industry. "Our sights are set on a return as soon as possible but our plan is to support this squad regardless."Complexity will make their team debut at Major League Gaming’s Spring Championships in Anaheim, California, later this month. After he tweeted a picture of a design document for the next Mass Effect, a fan suggested the game could be "years" away based on the heftiness of the folder. Roy responded, "Don't worry: we have a large and talented team, we started a while ago, and we are 'borrowing' a lot of game systems from [Dragon Age III]."None of these systems were detailed. Dragon Age: Inquisition was recently delayed a year from fall 2013 to fall 2014. In addition, the "III" was dropped from its title. BioWare announced the next Mass Effect game last September. It will not feature Commander Shepard, as his story came to a close in last year's Mass Effect 3. The untitled game will run on the Frostbite 3 engine and, according to executive producer Casey Hudson, will be "fresh and new." In addition to a new Mass Effect, BioWare is building an all-new IP and continues to work with Legendary Pictures on an upcoming Mass Effect film. "It's that we also have the game balance, animation, graphics, and sound to think about in order to make that character fully fleshed out in that universe. The Xbox One will require users to connect to the Internet once every 24 hours, something Navy Lt. Scott Metcalf believes will be a "showstopper" for those serving downrange, in the field, or at sea.A past report claimed Microsoft was working on a solution for those in Internet-free scenarios, though the company now says no such plan is in place. In addition, the Xbox One will be supported in only 21 countries. Those stationed in major military regions like Germany, Italy, or Great Britain will not have a problem. However, service members in Japan, Kuwait, Afghanistan, or other areas are in a bind.On top of this, since Xbox One games are region-locked, service members who import games won't be able to play them on their local machines. And as Navy Times points out, those who buy games locally will be out of luck, as Xbox Live accounts are tied to regions. The publication also calls out potential "serious" security concerns for the Xbox One, involving the system's Kinect camera and/or microphone recording conversations not meant to be heard outside of the military. Microsoft has said that the Xbox One does not record idle living room chatter."Microsoft has single-handedly alienated the entire military," naval aviator Jay Johnson wrote in a Gamasutra piece. "And not just the U.S. military--the militaries of the entire world."Johnson added that the Xbox One's Internet requirement is "the single greatest sin Microsoft has committed against all service members."Xbox executive Don Mattrick last week offered an alternative for those without an Internet connection, such as military members and students. "Fortunately, we have a product for people who aren't able to get some form of connectivity; it's called Xbox 360," Mattrick said. "If you have zero access to the Internet, that is an offline device." The creative director at WB Games Montreal, Eric Holmes, acknowledged this skepticism in a new interview, but said gamers will believe in the title once they get to play it. "I would say that people have the right to be cynical; they have the option to be cynical," Holmes told GameSpot. "Come and play the game at one of these events where we bring the game. And I think as soon as you've got the pad in your hand, you're going to see that this game is authentic and uses the same underpinnings and core mechanics of the previous Arkham games."Adding value to Arkham Origins, Holmes said, is the game's new tactical features, another facet of the project he believes consumers will be drawn to.Above all else, though, Holmes said he believes the story in Arkham Origins--which he wouldn't share details about--is the game's main draw."And I think we have a great story’I can't tell you too much about’but I can tell you I'm really excited about our story," Holmes said. "I think it's a very important Batman story and I think fans are going to love that probably more than any other thing in the game."Rocksteady previously said it is confident that WB Games Montreal will make a "fantastic" Batman game in Arkham Origins. Rocksteady is rumored to be at work on a stylized Batman prequel due in 2014 at the earliest.Batman: Arkham Origins launches October 25 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and Wii U. A 3DS game--Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate--will launch the same day for the 3DS and PlayStation Vita developed by a group of former Metroid Prime developers at Armature Studios. "We are aware of some reports of technical difficulties which are occurring and are currently investigating the situation," said a Nintendo representative to GameSpot. The crashes revolve around the fact that European and Japanese 3DSs today received an update adding four new minigames to the StreetPass Plaza. The games are priced at £4.49/€4.49 separately or £13.49/€14.99 as a bundle for the whole quartet. Current reports suggest the crashing affects only European users. The four games included in the update are the adventuring StreetPass Mansion, the strategy title StreetPass Battle, the gardening sim StreetPass Garden, and the side-scrolling shooter StreetPass Squad.Additional information about each game is presented to users after they have installed the system update. The update also adds two new puzzles--based on The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and Xenoblade Chronicles--and 99 new Mii hats. Interactive Entertainment president Martin Tremblay, who manages the Batman, Lord of the Rings, and Lego game franchises, is "very pleased" with the PlayStation 4's $400 price point. Despite his enthusiasm for the price, a full $100 below the Xbox One's $500 price tag, Tremblay said in an interview with GamesIndustry International that consumers will ultimately vote with their wallets. "This is spot-on what I think the price point needs to be, and it will energize and make the transition easier," Tremblay said. "That being said, we'll see how consumers are going to go for it. We're building for both platforms. We like both. The specs are amazing on both sides. But I really do like Sony's price point; this is something that can give us a chance to succeed quicker."Regarding the Xbox One's used-game stance, Tremblay said he was "surprised" by Microsoft's choice to leave decisions about allowing or denying secondhand sales up to publishers"You've got to listen to your consumers," Tremblay said. "You've got to listen to people playing the game. That's very important. I think I was a little bit surprised, to be honest’Now that we see that coming and we see what people want, just go with it. In an E3 investor briefing, president Satoru Iwata said Nintendo plans to avoid an "unbalanced" setup that has players paying "extremely large amounts of money." "Free-to-play games, if unbalanced, could result in some consumers paying extremely large amounts of money, and we can certainly not expect to build a good relationship with our consumers in this fashion," Iwata said. "In order to have a favorable long-term relationship, we would like to offer free-to-play games that are balanced and reasonable."Iwata also confirmed that this new free-to-play game will not involve Mario or Pokemon because consumers have already shown they are willing to pay full price for those franchises. At the same time, though, Iwata said a day may come when Nintendo's tentpole franchises could fit into the free-to-play space. "With games like Mario and Pokemon, we already have a sufficient degree of trust with our consumers who are willing to pay a certain sum of money to purchase our products as packaged software," Iwata said. "On the other hand, what are we to do when we want to offer a completely new product whose value consumers are yet to understand? Consumers are not sure if it is worth outlaying a certain sum of money for such a product," he continued. "In such circumstances, our current platforms , which give us various monetization options that would not have been possible on past Nintendo platforms, enable us to make propositions in a free-to-play format."Nintendo has a number of marquee franchises lined up to help spur Wii U sales, including Super Mario 3D World, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Super Smash Bros., and Mario Kart 8, among others. Speaking as part of a Nintendo E3 analyst briefing, Iwata said it is "critical" that Nintendo releases only well-polished games even if that means missing release dates from time to time."It is not an easy task to regain the trust of the fans of a franchise once you lose it," Iwata said. "Therefore, it is critical for us to improve and re-polish any game that we feel is still lacking in quality. Failing to do so, we feel, would be detrimental to what makes our strong franchises the valuable assets that they are."Iwata explained that consumers will be compelled by Nintendo's games only if they are "incredibly high-quality products," due in part to the rise of less expensive smartphone games. "I think it is becoming increasingly more difficult to have consumers understand and appreciate the value that a particular game offers than ever before," Iwata said. "For example, it is now common to find on smart devices a large volume of products categorized as games selling for one dollar. With countless games offered for free, consumers are far more careful than ever to decide whether it is worthwhile to spend dozens of dollars to buy one game." "Under these circumstances, we feel that it is important to offer games that are even more polished than before in terms of quality to have consumers buy our products, understand the value that they offer, and recommend them to others by word-of-mouth," he added. "It now requires incredibly high-quality products to satisfy consumers to the level where they feel compelled to recommend them to others; the barriers are indeed higher than before." Nintendo has no plans to bring any of its franchises to smartphones or tablets. The company said last week that the most effective way to leverage its brands is to release franchises on its own hardware, like the 3DS or Wii U."If you ported that same software to another device, you wouldn't have that same responsiveness," senior communications director Charlie Scibetta said. "You wouldn't have the same controls that Mr. Miyamoto and his teams designed it for."[ Watch Video ] Comment on this videoWatch this video in High Def Read and Post Comments | Get the full article at GameSpot "Nintendo: "It is not an easy task to regain trust"" was posted by Eddie Makuch on Tue, 18 Jun 2013 06:51:19 -0700Tue, 18 Jun 2013 09:51:19 -0400http://dailyme.com/story/2013061800005346Sony on why it won't hinder PS4 used games -- Flexibility creates valuehttp://dailyme.com/story/2013061800003171PlayStation boss Jack Tretton says ability to freely resell games creates value in the initial purchase; PS4 won't require online check-in because many countries don't have stable broadband access.  The PlayStation 4 is a consumer-focused machine, and that's why it will not limit used games or require users connect to the Internet once a day, according to executive Jack Tretton. "We're most concerned about the consumer. And we really appeal to consumers on a worldwide basis," Tretton told Bloomberg TV. "And I think in the United States, we realize there's a high degree of broadband adoption, but we're in a lot of countries where people don't have the ability to connect on a daily basis and we want to appeal to consumers worldwide."Speaking about used games, Tretton said the ability to freely share titles with friends or resell them to retailers creates value for the initial purchase. If this flexibility were to be taken away, consumers would be less likely to buy games, he argued."The other thing as it relates to the ownership of the game, if people pay a lot of money for that, they equate the value with the flexibility they have in that," Tretton said. "To do with it as they choose; to give it to their friends, sell it to their friends, trade it in to another retailer; that creates value in the initial purchase that they make."Competitor Microsoft has adopted a policy for the Xbox One that requires users to "check in" with a broadband connection once a day. In addition, though the system will allow used games, decisions will ultimately be left up to individual publishers. Also in the interview, Tretton spoke about the PS4's design. He called it "beautiful" and "very, very sexy.""People looked at it, and their jaw just dropped," he said. Regarding the PS4's $400 price point, a full $100 below Microsoft's $500 Xbox One, Tretton said Sony hit the sweet spot with balancing technological power and a consumer-friendly price point."The goal is always to reach the most consumer-friendly price point so you can drive volume as quickly as possible," Tretton said. "But you walk that line between wanting to deliver the ultimate technological experience at a reasonable price and we think we hit a really nice chord at $399 with PlayStation 4."[ Watch Video ] Comment on this videoWatch this video in High Def Read and Post Comments | Get the full article at GameSpot "Sony on why it won't hinder PS4 used games -- Flexibility creates value" was posted by Eddie Makuch on Tue, 18 Jun 2013 06:00:39 -0700Tue, 18 Jun 2013 09:00:39 -0400http://dailyme.com/story/2013061800003171Call of Duty: Black Ops II Vengeance DLC surfaces onlinehttp://dailyme.com/story/2013061800003179Leaked artwork suggests four new Black Ops II maps, one new Zombies level, and a new gun.  A leaked promotional poster suggests that the next DLC for Call of Duty: Black Ops II will be titled Vengeance. "Imagine playing Leisure Suit Larry but instead of watching a screen, you are inside the game," reads the Wicked Paradise site. "Imagine the world and its inhabitants look highly realistic. Imagine walking into a bar in Wicked Paradise, noticing a beautiful lady, talking to her, and seducing her. Imagine playing your cards right and having passionate wild sex with her."In an interview with Road to VR, the game's founder Jeroen Van den Bosch said "I was always fascinated by the fact that we have hundreds of beautifully crafted shooter games but not a single well designed erotic video game. Sure there have been some attempts in the past, but they all have been ridiculously bad. There is nothing sexy about unrealistic models that move like rusty robots with faulty servos. If you want to genuinely create an erotic atmosphere in a videogame you need to convincingly cross the uncanny valley."Elsewhere in the interview, den Bosch points to the kind of titillation seen in BioWare's Mass Effect as inspiration for Wicked Paradise. "Also, story and setting is everything. The non-explicit sex scenes in Mass Effect are much more erotic than current available explicit adult video games. This is because you care about the characters in Mass Effect. A player will never feel very attracted to a virtual character if he or she doesn’t care. The fighting game from Warner Bros. was also April's best-selling game in the US. Rounding out the top five best-sellers were Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Donkey Kong: Country Returns, Dead Island: Riptide, and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. Overall, total industry sales slid a significant 25 percent to $386.3 million. According to the NPD Group analyst Liam Callahan, however, this data represents only about half of the true consumer retail spend for the month. "These sales figures represent new physical retail sales of hardware, software, and accessories, which account for roughly 50 percent of the total consumer spend on games," Callahan said in a statement. "When taking into account our preliminary estimate for other physical format sales in May such as used and rentals at $91 million, and our estimate for digital format sales including full game and add-on content downloads including micro-transactions, subscriptions, mobile apps, and the consumer spend on social network games at $339 million, the total consumer spend in May is $787 million."On the hardware front, total sales dropped 31 percent to $96 million. The Xbox 360 was the top-selling console platform for the 29th straight month, moving 114,000 units in the period . The 3DS posted the best year-over-year trend, Callahan said."Nintendo's 3DS edged out the 360 as the top selling platform across hardware and portables. However, the 360 was the top selling console hardware platform this month for the twenty-ninth consecutive month," Callahan said. "The 3DS had the best year-over-year trending for hardware units, with units sales essentially flat from last May."Sony has not disclosed PlayStation 3 or PlayStation Vita sales for May. As for software, this category saw the most precipitous fall, diving 44 percent to $187.6 million. "Softness in new physical entertainment software sales stemmed from a decline in the number of new launches, with over 30 percent fewer new SKUs, as well as poor performance of the new SKUs that were released," Callahan said. "New SKUs generated over seventy percent less units on a per-SKU basis, and a decrease of over eighty percent revenue per SKU."Nintendo 3DS software sales were a bright spot for the month, up 60 percent from May 2012. In addition, three 3DS titles factored into the top-ten chart for May. "Overall entertainment software declines, down forty-four percent, were driven partly by sharp year-over-year declines within PC games due to poor comparisons to last year's Diablo III release," Callahan said."In May 2013, the top 10 games represented a lower percentage of sales compared to games from the previous few Mays at 18 percent of overall unit sales and 25 percent of overall dollars, compared to 30 percent of units and 45 percent of dollars in May 2012," Callahan continued. "This is contrary to trends we've been seeing over the last few years with the top ten games generating a larger percentage of overall sales and may be indicative of the weak new launch performance this May." The accessories category posted the smallest declines, falling only 6 percent to $115.3 million."This is best May for point and subscription card sales on record for both unit and dollar sales," Callahan said. The findings are part of the 2013 Essential Facts About the Computer and Video Game Industry, conducted by Ipsos MediaCT and based on a poll of more than 2,000 "nationally representative" households. The report also found that adult women represent a "significantly" greater portion of the gamer population that boys 17 and younger . In addition, according to the group's findings, women are 46 percent of the time the most frequent game purchasers. The report also highlighted trends regarding how closely parents monitor what their children purchase. According to the findings, parents are present when games are purchased 89 percent of the time, while children receive parents' permission to purchase or rent a game 80 percent of the time. Overall, 52 percent of parents believe video games are a positive part of their child's life.Other notable findings from the Essential Facts report include 58 percent of all Americans describing themselves are gamers in one way or another. In addition, 51 percent of all United States households own a dedicated game console; and those that do, own an average of two. The full report is available at the ESA website. The funds will be used to "accelerate" development of the Oculus Rift hardware, software, and services, the company said. "Oculus began with a single mission: to put players inside the game," said inventor Palmer Luckey. "This investment allows us to deliver immersive and affordable virtual reality to players everywhere." As part of the funding allocation, Spark founder Santo Politi and Matrix general partner Antonio Rodriguez will join the Oculus VR board of directors. In a statement, Oculus VR CEO Brendan Iribe explained that many challenges still lie ahead for the company, but the extra funding should help it achieve its goals. "There are still many challenging problems to solve, but with the support of these great investment partners, and our passionate community, we will continue to hire the brightest minds and stay laser focused on delivering the very best virtual reality platform possible," Iribe said. The Oculus Rift headset was successful on its first day on Kickstarter, raising a total of $2.4 million at the close of its crowd-funding campaign. Development kits are available now for game makers, though no release date has been set yet for a public release. Gate Five's lawyer Peter Gallagher said, "We've settled amicably. I can't discuss the terms of the settlement, but it was resolved. Gate Five filed suit in April 2011, claiming Knowles made an "extortionate demand" for a new compensation package. This maneuver reportedly backfired, driving away the financier and leading to Knowles pulling out of the project and thusly breaching the agreement. In an interview with Rock, Paper, Shotgun, Iwinski said making money is important to the health of the studio, but it should not be put before gamers' best interests. "But at the end of the day, the game [counts]--and not the money. Because the game will make the money if it’s good," Iwinski said.He said some people believe it's the other way around; and in the short-term, from a business perspective, this makes sense. However, putting aspirations for money before game design could lead to gamers losing faith in the company, something Iwinski wants to avoid."I think it's in a way our trademark. People buy our games on day one because they trust us," Iwinski said. "And if we screw that up, it’s the end of the story pretty much."Elsewhere in the interview, Iwinski said downloadable content and updates for the PC version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will be free, while console pricing has yet to be determined."It's too early to talk specifics, but definitely all the DLCs and updates will be free," Iwinski said. "Of course, we'll see what the platform holders will allow--what we can do for free [on next-gen consoles]. I mean, there are different business models on consoles. From our standpoint, we'll definitely do everything we can to deliver the same experience across all platforms."If CD Projekt Red decides to create "big" expansions for The Witcher 3, the studio will charge gamers an "honest and fair" price for the content, Iwinski said."But again, it's all value for money," he said. "I think $15-$20 for new gameplay is a pretty honest and fair deal. But additional weapons and fixes, those of course come as part of the package."The Witcher 3 launches in 2014 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. Speaking with Edge, Sundberg said games that are longer--or more replayable--are less likely to sold back to retailers. "I'm sure it's been an issue but that's because games have been too short," Sundberg said about why used games have been a hot topic of late. "I mean, when you can play a game through from 8 to 10 hours, I would return the game too, because there's no reason for players to play it again."Sundberg said Just Cause 2, released in March 2012, still has "hundreds of thousands" of daily players, demonstrating the strength of a highly replayable game."If you're offering little variation, then there's no motivation for the player to keep that game--unless they want to have a nice bookshelf. That's why we answered that with Just Cause. I go into game stores each week and I always go to the used game boxes--I usually don't find that many [copies of Just Cause]."Mario and Zelda company Nintendo shared a similar opinion. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said developers concerned over used game sales should make more compelling and replayable titles so that gamers do not trade them in. Valve told GameSpot that it will release more details in the next week or two."Dota 2 being officially released to the public acts as the next step for Valve in shipping the finished Dota 2 project," said David "GoDZ" Parker, Dota 2 Broadcaster for The BTS Studio. "While anyone interested in obtaining a beta key and playing the game could have already done so with minimal work, having the ease of play that being public brings will make it a true free-to-play game in the ARTS/MOBA genre."Less than three weeks ago, Dota saw one of its largest updates in the form of patch 6.78, including various changes to Captain’s Mode, and balance changes to nearly 75 percent of the heroes.
